 JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH
 
He is perhaps the most famous composer of the Baroque Period.

 1685-1750

 

German composer, the best-known of a distinguished musical family.

Of high repute in his time as organist, but achieved major standing as a composer
only with posthumous (19th. Century) revival.

Born at Eisenach......

 Studied under his brother Johann Christopher and, as a
 boy  chorister at Lüneburg, was apparently influenced by
 Georg Böhm.

 Held organist's or other posts at Weimar, 1703.
 Arnstadt, later in 1703; Mülhhausen, 1707;
 Weimar, 1708; Köthen, 1717.

 

 Then in 1723 in Leipzig as Cantor (director of music) at

 St. Thomas's Church, in which post he died shortly after

 becoming blind.

 Twice married, father of twenty children.

 Works, mostly written as official duty or with some other definite

 performance in view.

 Includes over 200 church cantatas (Lutheran), with orchestral

accompaniments, which include the ST. JOHN and ST. MATTHEW PASSIONS.
