 BÉLA BARTÓK

 (1881-1945)

 Hungarian composer settled in USA 1940, dying there a poor man. 
 From youth, a virtuoso pianist.
 Cultivated and developed Hungarian national music style; partly in association with   Kodály, collected and edited Hungarian folksongs, showing them to be
different from the gypsy music borrowed by Liszt, Brahms, etc.

Active in investigating other folk-music too.

His own works - often atonal and cultivating extreme dissonance, especially in his middle life - include opera 'Bluebeard's Castle', mime-plays 'The Wooden Prince' and 'The Miraculous Mandarin'.

Much piano music including Mikrokosmos, 'Out of Doors', and works for children.
Orchestral dance suite, concerto for orchestra; 'Music for strings', percussion, and Celesta, three piano concertos, two violin concertos,viola concerto (Posthumous), edited by T. Serly, six string quartets,
trio (Contrasts), songs and folk song arrangements. (see Cantata).
