 LEONARD BERNSTEIN

 (1918-1990)

 

American composer who also appears (sometimes simultaneously) as a pianist and
conductor; pupil of Piston and others; conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra,
1958; 'laureate conductor' 1969.

Works include JEREMIAH SYMPHONY; Symphony No. 2 with piano (THE AGE OF ANXIETY
after Auden), Symphony No. 3 (KADDISH), opera TROUBLE IN TAHITI, operetta CANDIDE
(after Voltaire); musicals ON THE TOWN (based on ballet 'Fancy Free') and WEST SIDE
STORY; songs, chamber music, CHICHESTER PSALMS (in Hebrew) for Chichester Cathedral
(choir and orchestra).

Notably influenced by jazz.  Also famous television commentator on music etc.
