GEORGES BIZET

[First names really Alexandre César Léopold]

 (1838-1875)

French composer, born in Paris, pupil of Halévy, whose daughter he married after Halévy's death.

At 19 Bizet won a prize for an operetta 'Doctor Miracle', he later composed operas including: THE PEARL FISHERS, THE FAIR MAID OF PERTH, CARMEN, IVAN THE TERRIBLE (not performed until 1946).

CARMEN at first only a moderate success; Bizet died three months later after its first performance.

His works, marked by clarity and melodic gifts, were later championed (e.g. by Nietzsche) as a counterblast to Wagner.
