JOHANNES
BRAHMS
(1833-1897)
German composer, also a pianist; born in Hamburg, where as a youngster he
played in sailors taverns; pupil of Marxsen.
In 1853 met Joachim, Liszt, Schumann, and others who became interested in
him; visited Vienna 1862, settled there in 1863 (also died there).
Never married. Entirely devoted to composition from 1864, but did not
write
the first of his four symphonies
till 1875.
Composed no opera and did not follow widely prevalent Lisztian of programmed
music, but developed
the forms of Beethoven's period and showed notable rhythmic
originality.
Works include two piano concertos, violin concerto, double concerto (violin
and cello).
Wrote Variations on themes by Haydn, Händel and Paganini.
Also choral works including 'GERMAN REQUIEM' and 'ALTO
RHAPSODY'.
