  CARL CZERNY

  (1791-1857)

  Austrian pianist and composer of an enormous
  number of piano studies; also of many other
  piano works (e.g. fantasies on popular operatic
  and other tunes of the day), and of church music, etc.

  Contributor to the HEXAMERON.
  Variations contributed by Liszt, Thalburg, Herz,
  Pixis, Czerny, and chopin on a march from
  Bellini's  THE PURITANS, 1831; with linking
  passages by Liszt. 
 
 (From Greek for 'six days') cp. 'Decameron', ten days-
  alluding to the six composers. cp. GODOWSKY.

 Pupil of Beethoven and himself a famous teacher of e.g. Liszt.
