EDWARD ELGAR

 (1857-1934)

 English composer, all but self-taught; Roman Catholic, but was much associated with the Three Choirs Festival (based on Anglican Cathedrals).

 The ENIGMA VARIATIONS and THE DREAM OF GERONTIUS established him
 1899-1900.

 Had already song cycle SEA PICTURES.

Later wrote oratorios THE APOSTLES and THE KINGDOM (intended as the first two parts of an
uncompleted trilogy.   Cantata THE MUSIC MAKERS, two symphonies, symphonic study FALSTAFF,
overtures COCKAIGNE and IN THE SOUTH, recitation with orchestra.

CARRILLON; Introduction and Allegro for Strings; violin concerto, cello concerto, chamber music, etc.

The SEVERN SUITE for brass band is one of his few post-1919 works.

Knighted in 1904; Order of Merit 1911, Master of the King's Music 1924, Baronet 1931.

Popular works such as the 5 POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE marches.
