   STEPHEN COLLINS FOSTER

  (1826-1864)

American composer, almost entirely self-taught.  Composed many songs to his own words,
including THE OLD FOLKS A HOME, CAMPTOWN RACES, and other 'Plantation' songs;
i.e. of the black-faced minstrel show type) which became among the world's best known songs;
often with some alteration of the original tunes...
also 'Drawing-room songs', e.g. JEANIE WITH THE LIGHT BROWN HAIR.

Died poor and an alcoholic.
