 CÉSAR AUGUSTE FRANCK

 (1822-1890)

 Belgian composer, son of a German mother; studied in Paris Conservatoire and settled in Paris in 1844.

 Was also organist (eventually at the church of Ste. Clotilde, Paris), and noted teacher.  Exponent of cyclic form (use of the same theme in more than one movement or section of a work), e.g. in Symphonic Variations for piano and orchestra, violin sonata.


Also evolved notably individual harmonic language, much given to CHROMATICSM.

Other works include Symphony; THE ACCURSED HUNTSMAN, THE JINNS,  and other symphonic poems, piano quintet and other chamber music; piano and organ works; many songs, religious cantatas including THE BEATITUDES and THE REDEMPTION; 4 operas (one unperformed and unpublished).
