GEORGE GERSHWIN

 (1898-1937)

 American pianist and composer of many popular songs; extended his range
 (especially applying jazz idioms to concert works) in RHAPSODY IN BLUE 1924;
 piano concerto CUBAN OVERTURE, and AMERICAN IN PARIS opera, PORGY AND BESS, piano preludes.

The orchestration of RHAPSODY IN BLUE is by F. Grofé; of the other works by Gershwin himself.  Studied with R. Goldmark but was mainly self-taught.

Died after an unsuccessful brain operation.
