English dramatist, GONDOLIERS, GRAND
DUKE, HMS PINAFORE,
IOLANTHE, MIKADO, PATIENCE, PINEAPPLE POLL, PIRATES OF
PENZANCE, POP, PRINCESS IDA, RUDDIGORE, SAVOY OPERAS,
SORCERER, TRIAL BY JURY, UTOPIA LIMITED, THE YEOMAN OF THE GUARD.

SIR ARTHUR [SEYMOUR] SULLIVAN
(1842-1900)
English composer (also organist and
conductor), who studied in Leipzig.
Wrote much serious music - including symphony, OVERTURA DI BALLO,
religious cantata THE GOLDEN LEGEND, opera IVANHOE - but made his
chief reputation in a long series of successful operettas, combining
solid musical construction
with apt reinforcement of verbal points.
Those written with W.S. Gilbert as liberettist are THESPIS (lost,
unpublished); TRIAL BY JURY,
THE SORCERER, HMS PINAFORE, THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE, PATIENCE, IOLANTHE,
PRINCESS
IDA, THE MIKADO, RUDDIGORE, THE YEOMAN OF THE GUARD, THE GONDOLIERS, and,
finally
an unsuccessfully UTOPIA LIMITED and THE GRAND DUKE.
Operettas without Gilbert COX AND BOX (unfinished) THE EMERALD ISLE completed
by German.
Knighted 1883.
