EDVARD HAGURUP GRIEG
(1843-1907)
Norwegian composer whose Scottish great
grandfather's name
was Grieg; also pianist particularly to his wife (Cousin Nina)
who sang his songs.
Encouraged by Ole Bull, went to study in Leipzig,
pupil of Gade in Copenhagen. Became a 'nationalist' in music.
At Ibsen's request wrote music for
PEER GYNT.
Wrote an early symphony, works also include piano concerto,
'HOLBERG SUITE'
for strings, and music to Bjørnson's
'Sigurd Jorsalfar'
(see Homage March).
Choral works, 'Bergliot' (text by Bjørnson), for recital
and
orchestra, three violin
sonatas, many songs and piano
works, various Norwegian folk-music arrangements.
Had Norwegian government pension. Often visited Britain.
