'Nimrod Variations' was composed by Edward Elgar (1857-1934), who was all but self-taught.

Elgar was a Roman Catholic but was much associated with the Three Choirs Festival based on Anglican Cathedrals. Elgar was knighted in 1904; Order of Merit 1911; Master of the King's Music 1924; and made baronet in 1931.
He evolved a forthright style which won recognition as 'national', though not indebted to folk-song.
Some of his most famous music is 'Pomp and Circumstance'.
