   EDWARD MACDOWELL [ALEXANDER]

   (1860-1908)

    American composer, also pianist.
     Trained in France and Germany.
    
    Wrote many short piano pieces, somewhat after Grieg's
    manner, which once had a wide popularity; also two
    piano concertos, 'Hamlet and Ophelia' and other
    symphonic poems, songs, etc.

    The MacDowell colony - a peaceful working-place for
    composers and other artists in New Hampshire - was
    organised in his memory.
