  SERGEY VASSILIEVICH RAKHMANINOV

  (1873-1943)

Russian composer and pianist (the spellings Rachmaninoff
etc.with the now standard system of transliteration
  from Russia).

Wrote his piano prelude in C#-minor at age of 20.

He left Russia in 1918, disliking the Soviet régime,
and lived mainly in Switzerland and USA where he died.

Nevertheless he conspicuously aided the Russian
anti-Nazi effort in the Second World War.
He always maintained a Russian outlook and wrote in an
emotional (and sometimes melancholy) romantic style.

  Works include four piano concertos,
RHAPSODY ON A THEME OF   PAGANINI for piano and
orchestra,  many piano solos (including transcriptions from
other composers), and some two piano works, also
  three symphonies, symphonic poem
THE ISLE OF THE DEAD,  three operas,
chorale work THE BELLS (after Poe), songs.
