    ERIK SATIE [ALFRED LESLIE]

   (1866-1925)

French composer; for a time worked as a café pianist, etc.

At 39 he became a pupil of Roussel and d'Indy.

Influenced younger composers towards a cool, clear style
and away from the lushness sometimes associated with
    Impressionism.

His piano solos and duets mostly have eccentric titles,
e.g., THREE PEAR SHAPED PIECES, several of these were
    orchestrated by Poulenc and others.

Wrote also ballets, including 'Relāche' (the word displayed by French theatres when they are closed).

Operettas, Mass (Messe des Pauvres), symphonic drama and 'Socrates'.
