   CLARA [JOSEPHINE] SCHUMANN

  (Born Wieck 1819-1896)

  German pianist and composer, chiefly for piano,
   daughter of the composer Frederick Wieck
   (1788-1873), and wife of R. Schumann (below).

   Made many visits to Britain, internationally noted as
   a performer of her husband's and other works, and also as teacher.

  

  ROBERT [ALEXANDER] SCHUMANN

  (1810-1856)

German composer also pianist, conductor, and noted as critic with wide sympathies.

Married Clara Wieck (as shown) 1840. Developed mental instability in 1854, throwing himself into
the Rhine; afterwards was in a mental asylum, where he died.

His work shows romantic outlook and literary associations.
the fanciful titles (some given after compositions, however) of various piano works, e.g.,
ABEGG VARIATRIONS, CARNIVAL, CARNIVAL JEST FROM VIENNA, KREISLERIANA, PAPILLONS,
SCENES OF CHILDHOOD, (see also DAVIDSBÜNDLER).

Other works include many songs (some in cycles e.g. POETS LOVE, WOMAN'S LOVE AND LIFE);
three string quartets, piano concerto, cello concerto, violin concerto (not heard until 1937, being
suppressed by his wife Clara Schumann and Joachim as unworthy); four symphonies (No.1 Spring
Symphony, No. 3 Rhenish, No. 4 originally written directly after No. 1, later re-scored);
a cantata PARADISE AND THE PERI, opera GEONOVEVA, scenes from Goethe's FAUST, incidental
music to Byron's MANFRED.
