JOHANN STRAUSS [the Elder]
(1804-1889)
Austrian violinist, conductor and
composer who
toured much, was in Britain for 1834 for celebrations
of Queen Victoria's Coronation.
Wrote waltzes, polkas, etc., but today chiefly
famous for THE RADETZKY MARCH.
Father of Eduard Strauss and Johann and Josef Strauss.

JOHANN STRAUSS
[the Younger]
(1825-1899)
Austrian violinist, conductor, and
composer of enormously successful waltzes in noticeably
artistic style - including THE BLUE DANUBE, ROSES FROM THE SOUTH, TALES FROM THE
VIENNA WOODS, called the Waltz King.
Wrote also polkas THUNDER & LIGHTNING etc., and other dances and 16 operettas including
THE BAT (FLEDERMAUS) and THE GYPSY BARON.
Other operettas e.g. VIENNA BLOOD, have been made by others from his music.
Toured much (London 1869, USA 1872), son of Johann Strauss, collaborated in a
few works with his
brother Josef Strauss.
